Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police state they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then found many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state initial examinations indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in association with the event," they stated.
City officials said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
A senior representative stated the vandalism left him without words and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
