Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
